“NFL Ownership Meeting in Minneapolis Delays Vote on Washington Commanders’ Sale; Review Process Underway”

In an anticipated development, the upcoming NFL ownership meeting in Minneapolis will not feature a vote on the sale of the Washington Commanders. The team’s purchase and sale agreement were announced last Friday, with Josh Harris and his partners acquiring the franchise from Dan and Tonya Snyder for a staggering $6.05 billion.

League executive vice president of communications, public affairs, and policy, Jeff Miller, confirmed that ownership would receive an update regarding the sale. However, the transaction is still in its early stages of review by the league office and the NFL owners’ finance committee.

Miller explained the meticulous process involved, stating, “There is work that goes into that, and staff is doing that now,” during a conference call with reporters. He did not provide a specific timetable for the formalization of the ownership change but assured that the process was being handled expeditiously, aligning with standard procedures observed in recent sales.

The Snyders had previously engaged Bank of America Securities in November to explore potential transactions involving the team. Soon after, Harris, a native of the D.C.-area, emerged as a prominent candidate, boasting prior experience in professional sports ownership with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and the NBA’s Philadelphia Sixers.

In addition, Miller revealed that there were no updates on the Mary Jo White report. The former chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is conducting an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct involving Snyder and the Commanders’ organization. The findings of the investigation will be announced once the report is completed.

While the ownership meeting will not feature a vote on the sale, the review process for the Washington Commanders’ change in ownership is underway, marking a significant development in the ongoing saga surrounding the franchise.
