A few contemporary horror films, such as “Beau is Afraid” and “Evil Dead Rise,” take advantage of the psychological terrors that might result from having a difficult connection with one’s mother. Horror expert Adam Lowenstein of the University of Pittsburgh said the genre is well suited for tackling these kinds of intellectual concerns.
